Chokecherry
Chokecherry
Prunus virginiana
Chokecherry is a large shrub to small tree native to Minnesota. You'll find this tree along forest edges and roadsides throughout the state, and now you can plant one in your yard! Chokecherry has small white flowers in spring which develop into dark red to black fruit. Chokecherry fruits are tart but can be foraged and used in jams and pies! Chokecherry pits contain cyanide compounds, which can be poisonous. Swallowing a few pits is unlikely to cause harm; crushing, grinding, or chewing and ingesting pits should be avoided.
