Mountain Maple

Mountain Maple

Acer spicatum

The Mountain Maple is a small understory tree that has a shrub-like appearance. It is disease and insect resistant, but could use a little protection from the sun. The fruits, a pair of winged seeds (you may recall playing with "propellers" at one point or another) are red and brown. This species is important in preventing erosion on steep slopes or streambanks. If you're working on filling up the understory on your property or landscaping around your home, this is a great option to explore.
