The yellow birch is a native, shade tree that is one of the largest hardwoods in North America. The bark is a shiny yellow to gray-silver that splits into curly strips and becomes a reddish-brown as it matures. A fun characteristic of the yellow birch is the stems contain a wintergreen scent. This variety of birch is less susceptible to the bronze birch borer or leaf miner that affects other birches.
