Palo de hierro
Palo de hierro
Ostrya virginiana
Handsome medium-sized tree perfect for Twin Cities yards. This shade-tolerant species has interesting bark characteristics. Hop-like fruit emerges in late summer and persists throughout the winter. This graceful tree has horizontal branching which evolves into a rounded shade when mature. Ironwoods often hang onto their leaves throughout the winter so they can provide year round interest.
